2:00 - 2:30pm Registration for Workshop

2:30 - 5:30pm Your Total Onboarding Program–An Integrated Approach to Recruiting, Hiring and Accelerating Talent

You've heard a lot about designing, developing and managing a total onboarding program. It's crucial to increasing employee retention and productivity.

This master class will help you move beyond all the talk. You'll learn exactly how to implement a systemic approach to onboarding for your organization.

That is, you’ll learn how to develop a unified approach where all efforts pull in the same direction, and the contributions of different groups fit together to produce a whole—without gaps, without friction, without unnecessary duplication of effort.

You'll discover how alignment enables you to get more done in less time, with less effort, and a far greater impact. Specifically, you'll learn:

  • How to compress recruiting, hiring and assimilation time
  • How to reduce hiring mistakes by making everyone, including prospective hires, fully aware of what the job requires—from the employee and from the organization
  • How to align new employees with critical business strategies

Onboarding Strategy and Tactics

Strategy (what-to-do) and tactics (how-to-do-it) must be rendered explicit to make onboarding work.

Because this master class distills years of observation, study, and practice, the instructors are able to use actual "mini-cases" examples and illustrations of the right and wrong onboarding policies and practices.

This master class, alone, will save you from trial and error learning that could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted efforts.

The entire program focuses on developing a strategic and integrated tactical onboarding plan.

A Step -By- Step Approach

Total onboarding requires the hiring manager to lead each new employee’s onboarding experience from start to finish.

Hiring managers should start by creating the overall TOP plan. They should get people aligned around that plan and its importance. They should take primary responsibility for its execution and coordination across people and functions.

The required strategic and tactical steps required to lead the organization’s thinking transformation will be covered in this onboarding master class:

  • Making the Case for Onboarding
  • Understanding Current Components and Systems—Base Measurement
  • Mapping Future State vs. Current State and Making Choices on What to Do First
  • Building Alignment: Making the Case for Investment, Agreements & Change Metrics
  • Project Planning—Development, Communication, Training, Piloting and Deployment.

Competencies Workshop: Monday September 27, 2010

5:30 - 6:00pm Registration for Competencies Workshop

6:00 - 8:30pm A Closer Look At Behavioral Competencies: What Really Counts and How To Count It

You have heard the consulting firm promise: “Through extensive review of best practices, we have developed a dictionary of competencies that have been shown to be critical to organizational success.” A reality check: no one set of competencies exists for everyone or core set of competencies for all work in all companies.

This fast passed and highly informative workshop session will focus on understanding

  • How does one accurately and objectively measure the intangible of a behavioural competency?
  • Why many behavioural competency statements are really outcome statements?
  • What defines a competency statement that makes the statement behavioural?
  • Why behavioural competencies for your organization have to be developed within your organization and cannot be ‘benchmarked’ or developed from a list of predefined behavioural competencies?
  • Why most organizations struggle with defining their values so all employees understand the values the same, at all levels and in all roles?
  • What actions can you take to validate your competency model for your organization?
  • Can competency models for human resources activities be levelled or is levelling a myth perpetuated by compensation-focused consultancies?

This workshop is designed to inform the beginners as to what makes for a user friendly and company specific and validated competency model. For those with experience in using competency models or who have been using them for some time this workshop is designed to provide a different perspective on behavioural competencies and either confirm you understanding or raise questions that will lead to a deeper appreciation for the successful application of behavioural competencies.

The session will conclude with a practical look at behavioural competencies and why the models have to be simple, user friendly, and understand by all the same way. To do this we will look was what makes a behavioural interview questions behavioural. Participants will receive a sample of behavioural interview questions.
